Hey everybody... this will be a way to keep all of yall back home updated on everything thats going on down here in FL. I won't be able to put everything on here b/c some of this stuff is pretty confidential but I'll try to hit the main points of each day.
Quick recap of the past few weeks...
So I've been here for about a month now and have finally gotten settled into my room. When I got here the dorms were still being renovated so I was put in a room on the 3rd floor where I stayed for a few weeks then I had to move down to the 1st floor for a week and now I'm back on the 3rd... hopefully for good this time. I have my own room but I have to share a bathroom with one of the other interns. There are 3 of us total... Player Development (me), Scouting, and International Scouting. We have to be in the office everyday by 9am. Then we get a break for lunch about noon and usually get done about 5pm... although that will change very soon once Spring Training gets in full swing. Pitchers and catchers are all here right now and I get to go watch them practice tomorrow morning. They even gave me a media pass which gets me into the clubhouse and the camera wells... pretty cool. The first few weeks my work was mostly coping stuff, filing stuff, and updating excel spreadsheets of rosters and stuff. But its transitioning into more exciting projects. As some of you have heard, I've seen a few of the big league guys in the office already and a couple of days ago I got to meet the GM and Asst. GM, so that was pretty cool. Zumaya has been in the office a lot. He zooms around Tigertown in a huge Chevy truck that would make anything Castellaw has ever driven look like a micro-machine.
Lakeland is a pretty small city... maybe a bit larger than Collierville... with much less to do. Most days its work, eat, chill in the room for awhile, work out, watch some tv, then go to sleep. When the #1 ranked Memphis Tigers play, I usually meet up with one of our minor league players, who is also from Memphis, to watch the game. We don't get CSTV in our cable package and the only place in town that gets it is a small sports bar downtown called "The Gym". Its usually pretty empty so they are more than happy to turn on the Memphis game when we go. I've been visiting a few churches around here so thats given me something to do every once in awhile. I actually just got back from a church called Baylife. Its about 30 minutes away but its good to get out of Lakeland every once in awhile. They have a decent sized college/20something group ( I'm not in college anymore so that doesn't apply but I refuse to call it a "Singles" group... BBC people know why) that has a bible study on Friday nights. It reminds me a lot of our old "CBS" times at Bellevue. I've gotten to meet a few friends there which has been nice. I've also checked out First Baptist Lakeland which is right down the street. They meet in an old mall and their college/20something group meets in the mall's old movie theater. They have a similar bible study on Thursday nights and their own worship service on Sundays... at 12:30pm! How great is church at 12:30... I can sleep til noon.
Thats all for tonight. Tomorrow Lakeland is having their annual pancake festival here at Tigertown from 7am - 7pm. Its like $5 for all you can eat all day. A lot of the Tigers administration is eating there in the morning before we go and watch practice. Sleep tonight will be sketchy... there is some high school team staying in our dorms tonight and probably tomorrow night too. One of the coaches just asked me what position I played... I was honest and told him I was an intern in the front office... but he's the 6th person since I've been here to ask if I was a player... I'm just going to start saying yes.
Ya'll remember to keep Furniss and the others at Union in your prayers as they recover from the torandos. Check back tomorrow for more.
